Picture this , you are in a Rodeo and trying to harness a mean looking buffalo to grant you a boon, to  mount and ride him for a few minutes (tops)thus proving your manhood/women’s lib, coming out, whatever….but as you guess the bull has a mind of his own, and not only will he resist all your attempts but would also ensure he buckles you down and if possible trample you or even worse gore you all the way to which ever kind of heaven you believe in. And dear reader it would not take a Sigmund Freud to analyse why the said cattle was as the southerner’s say “pissed off” ,he plainly had other priorities and was not ready to compromise and what about us or the rider why did we not let him be, because we had to satiate our ego’s, prove to the gladiator in us that we shall NEVER take no for an answer.

I know I know it’s really easy to talk big to try to emulate Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Bodisattva and curb our primary instincts but as humans it is a very rare person who is not a slave of his emotions. Rare is what I said not well done.

I know I know(2.1) odes have been written since time started and many a wise men have come and gone trying to conquer and help us beat the seethe and resolve this plague forever but alas, prophets have come and gone saints have tried but man, man never stops feeding the Red Dragon.

I am not here to give you management tips to evade or avoid conflicts , everyone feels that they are the vindicated ones, but then why do we feel no remorse sharpening the swords, or filing our nails.

There is just one real way to Positively Manage a conflict : ” Manage Your Self “

Deewar “The Wall”, a ground breaking movie of 1975 which gave India and the world the concept of an ANGRY YOUNG MAN- Amitabh Bachchan who labors away a part of his life living on ideals that were embedded in every Indian and when sells his soul, he does so with grit and charisma dogmatically seeped with the ideals he was trying to get away from.Of course the nautch girls , with a morally up right mother and a principled younger brother who ironically becomes a part of the law, our hero ultimately meets his end but not without correcting the wrongs he encountered and getting the absolvment from his estranged mother. It is of little concern that he is hunted and finally killed by his own brother. Good has to triumph over evil (well at least the bad).

Salim /Javed (Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar) were the writers of this immemorial saga and the creator of the Legend VIJAY. Javed Akhtar used terrific situations and translated them to highly emotional situational screenplay , which has left an imprint in every Indian mind , either it being the Hero who is an atheist remembers to take his shoes off before entering the temple thou he is mortally wounded, the two brothers meeting at a rendez vouz where the police officer wants his brother to confess, or the Hero making is mark amongst gangsters by stating that “Elevators do not have ears”.

The one significant situation which draws immense character and emotions is when Vijay is approached by a lot of Hoodlums who seem impressed by his physical prowess’s and courage make him an offer to join them.

VIJAY LISTENS TO THE GANG LEADERS OFFER AND STARES OUT OF THE WINDOW OF A HIGH RISE AT THE PROMENADE BELOW AND IS DEEP IN THOUGHT…. , Mulk Raj Dhabaria THE Corrupt industrialist cum smuggler played by Ifterkhar asks him his reason of brooding and Vijay Replies that HE IS LOOKING DOWN AND SEEING A WOMEN STRUGGLING ON THE STREETS ON BOMBAY WITH HER TWO SONS, HE DESCRIBES HER ANGUISH,HER JOURNEY,HER RESILIENCE …everyone who has seen the movie is not only carried away and is one with Vijay and his euphoria , his relief, his  struggle , his perils , his Anger , his moments and finally when he tells Dabria,” MAIN AAJ BHI PHENKE HUWA PAISE NAHIN UTHATHA HU” even today i do not stoop to pick up money.

This moment of triumph, glory, recognition , fatigue of finally making it in life was captured beautifully and crafted for the silver screen. But this moment of success of the wait finally being over is one that many come across in their lives but do not cherish and celebrate. This is a moment which comes and goes and is never recorded in our memories. This moment of Euphoria of finally making it in life post strife and struggle is what I have called “ THE DEEWAR EFFECT”

If you have every experienced the same, share your moment of glory, it definitely is a time worth exemplifying.

He likes me….He likes me not….She likes me…She likes me not…..

For every time if everyone would have plucked a leave from a clover to fathom out these baffling emotions at workplaces, I am sure the world would be devoid of any plant life. These may be contextual i different ways, a CEO may contemplate it while answering the Boards queries,Managers either their superiors or subordinates and yes even the janitor. It could be after a reprimand,or answering questions about Non Performance or just your teams indifference to you.

Millions of books have been written to improve your selling skills, your management talents up man-ship or even what  lunch to order after a hectic client meet,(and believe me this is one definite thing  which breaks logger jams) People like Dale Carnegie and other maestro’s tried genuinely to help people evolve and also did Deepak Chopra try to inculcate healthy habits in workplaces, but who are we kidding , I am always the victim. The devil be damned. No matter how many workshops, team building activities, incentives are poured in by organizations ,they are led by fellow humans.

No this is not a session on how to change I to We,but some points to ponder…

There is little doubt in anybody’s mind that we live in a perspective driven world and we hate perspectives of others or how people form opinions though whatever they may have led them,to such a conclusion may have been a momentarily displayed trait but then again judgment has never been mankind’s forte,(nor was it for Justitia). And there is one fact, which we always turn a blind eye to,the most important one and ignored which is that only we,yes we have the ability to change just one thing….Ourselves…..

But why bother, its easier to conveniently blame others…isn’t it?

Work place Melancholy

A word least used in day to day terminology but an ailment of which everybody has been afflicted , sometime in their lives. This could be for many reasons, it could be self caused or by others, but in whole the person who is in this aberrant  frame of mind, never wanted to be there in the first place never the less is there now.

There is a aphorism inscribed in the pronaos (forecourt) of the temple of Apollo at Delphi which reads as “Gnothi Seauton” which means “KNOW THYSELF” (and no I do not refer to the Sarah Conner Chronicles), but really do we have any idea who we are? Before my wisdom is questioned,I would like my readers to ask themselves this question,in solitude reflecting their day to day lives.

I then ask again ” Do you know yourself?”

Man has wandered for centuries trying to understand  “Tat Tvam Asi” (WHAT YOU ARE) or Anaa/Fanaa/Bakaa (I, Transit,Eternal),in order to understand himself but only a few do get answers. In his search he encounters truths , lies, and of course the void. One thing that he learns even if he does not get all the answers is that how small or how in consequent is he , his existence.

He understands…He acknowledges…His first step begins…but he leaves the search as he feels defeated, his understanding is left incomplete,he is the winner,he is the looser….if only he had!

Our day to day lives are intertwined , in this perspective driven world, if you do have the energy to feel sad,you should have the time to know whom you should be knowing…..yourself.

And if Zen could help Robert Persig repair his motorcycle, I am sure it can help evolve better at our workplaces.

“As you climb the ladder of success,

be sure it’s leaning against the right building.”

~Quoted in P.S. I Love You, compiled by H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

Do you remember your first day at your workplace, or for that matter wherever You have had a job?

You must have memories of those first days. Do you remember the bounce in your step whilst walking thru the office lobby, shaking hands with new colleagues ,your first lunch at office and the end of your first day? The desire for it to be tomorrow, the sadness of the day ending soon. Well if only that day could be replicated in our lives every day!!

Somewhere in our day to day grind we loose focus, we get disillusioned about everything and that is when complacency starts to creep in with its accomplices.

Dreams Die First, they do so quite easily. We usually hasten its demise and abet its strangulation with or without our knowledge only to lament/brood/complain of what we lost or how things could have been IF….In a Perspective driven World , we tend to become one of the pack …never to retrospect or introspect ,which could be helpful.

Work place synergy quite often is something that we loose out on or miss.On a average of 30 % of our lifetime that we spend in jobs/workplaces ,we get trapped in the myriad world of Goal Sheets, performance, deadlines and KRA’S.

Nothing we do or try helps us in evolving to the ideal fellow worker and the Utopia of a perfect workplace remains…..

And to quote Henry Davies in Leisure:

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

More on work place synergy coming soon.
